Palky's Players of the Week - 2009
Round 1
To Palky’s Player Of The Week. Now as you know The Hackney Hotel is our new
sponsor and they have kindly offered the club a jug of beer per week for Palky’s Player Of
The Week. So now in addition to getting the adulation of all your basketball peers you also
get a jug of the sweet amber … sweet!
There were a few standout performances this week –
Liam’s 4 3’s in a good first up win, Lunny’s work in the post and on the boards, Mike Tye’s
clutch free throws, Nathan Graham being in a class of his own in the C’s, Daniele arguably
having his best game for the basketball club.
That all said, this week’s PPOTW goes to Andrew
Good in the A’s. Leading the team with 16 points (his new high) against quality opposition –
his work in the post, defensively and rebounding help his team to a solid win. Well Done Goody.

Round 2
Palky’s Player Of The Week – Week 2: I didn’t see the A’s game but as Purge said if he leads the scoring with 8 you know you didn’t have a great day. Altmann played a great 2nd half getting back into shooting form and Simon Miller had a 5 minute purple patch in the B’s. As I told everyone in the C’s “I had a great day today” … a statement which will no doubt lead to me not getting any votes come Players’ Player time … a joke that keeps on giving. Cliff had a great 1st half in the D’s and Kaine finished with 20.
This week’s PPotW will go to Nathan Graham. G-Man had 15 points leading the way offensively and defensively he took the SPOC 6’7’’ monster when we switched to man nullifying his effects on the boards. Well done G.

Round 3
Palky’s Player Of The Week – Week 3: In the A’s Stu had 17, Liam had 16 (and a tech … Liam’s outbursts are always amusing) and Purge had 15. In the B’s Lunny and Heath were the standouts for their all over team play. In the C’s G’s 1st half performance was fantastic but he missed a too few many jumpers in the 2nd half and got a bit hungry. Toddy gets a nomination for his excellent play and leadership in the E’s.
If you were at the pub you will know that PPotW went to Tim Purgacz. Tim set his PAOCBC high on Saturday while still playing great D, hitting the boards hard and set up numerous baskets with good passes. Well done Purge.

Round 4
Palky’s Player Of The Week – Week 4:
There were some really great efforts this week – Blair and Altmann
played great this week and would normally have taken out PPotW but are the victims of their own high
standards. Orkington was fantastic – the best game he has played for the club – a dominant effort on
both ends – actually took the aggression he shows at training to the game … maybe listening to Metallica
could get me to play well.
However, this week’s Palky’s Player of the Week goes to Daniele Tosato.
Daniele has improved out of sight this year – he made a number of long pull up jumpers, ran the break
and finished brilliantly scoring his high of 18 points. To put that in perspective, Flair has been in
this club 15 years and his high is 17 (haha – the same age as his girlfriend). Daniele also played great
D filling the passing lanes and causing general havoc. Well done – a jug is coming your way.

Round 5
Palky’s Player Of The Week – Week 5:
2 real standouts this week – Blair and Corey – but again Blair is victim of how high he has
set his own bar. This week PPotW is Corey MacLean. With the D’s missing 2
of their better players and with very little height in the team, Corey has
to play centre, do a workman’s load of ball handling, post up, shoot 3’s,
rebound and pass. With 21 of the teams 36 points and assisting a large
portion of the other baskets, Corey’s all round game (he is like a white
version of Larry Bird) gets him this week’s Palky’s Player of the Week.
Free jug coming your way Corey..

Round 6
Palky’s Player Of The Week – Week 6:
There were some great performances this week - in the A's Purge and Jack played fantastic, G-Man in the C's
was the reason offensively his team had the win, Kaine again is proving a force in the D's with 21 points.
This week's PPotW goes to our benevolent leader Liam Golding.
Liam came of the bench and put the A's offense into overdrive. He hit 4 3's (one on the final buzzer),
finished tough lay-ups going to the basket and rebounded, passed and played great D.
Well Done Liam.

Round 7
Palky’s Player Of The Week – Week 7:
Some good performances this week – Stu MacDonald was the shining light in the A’s loss – 4 3’s – 2 clutch ones in the second half, Altmann and “Casual” Jay were great in the B’s win, Phil Motteram was solid in the C’s – clearly the best player, Jamie Young was “delicious” in the D’s and Daniele was the best in the E’s. This week’s PPotW goes to James Baker.
Baker played great hitting 3 3’s and 2 clutch ones helping the B’s defeat Somerton for the first time. Well done James.

Round 8
Palky’s Player Of The Week – Week 8:
Tough one this week – Blair played ok but shot way too much, Altmann had a good first half, Mike Tye played well taking a lot of the scoring responsibility and Heath’s leadership with invaluable, Phil was best for the C’s, Kaine was easily the highest scorer for the week but I can’t give it to him cos 1. I don’t have his email and 2. He hasn’t paid subs and Trev probably played his best game in 10 years but sadly it was in a forfeit
so I don’t know if I can count it.
So this week’s PPotW is Stu MacDonald. Mid-way through the 1st half I turned to Simon Miller (Captain/Coach/Treasurer/Life Member/6 Time Best Team Man) and said Stu would be the one to win the game for the A’s. In the 2nd half Stu proved me right … He hit 3 straight 3’s and made a tough lay-up in the lane. Stu got 4 of 5 offensive boards, his defence was solid and his constant movement in offense made it tough for the B’s to get their D ever set. Well done Stu.

Round 9
Palky’s Player Of The Week – Week 9:
There were some good individual efforts – Blair’s 25 was good in a loss but shot a little too much for me to be convinced he deserves this week’s PPotW, Lunny and B-Rad were the best in the B’s (Lunny has to be closing as favourite for the Player’s Player for the B’s),
G was best again for the C’s and BB and Phil defensively were ... as Bruce says “special”, in the D’s Jamie was outstanding – leading an undermanned squad with 14 points and in the E’s, Players’ Player favourite, the ageless Troy “Trevor” Tirrell was the best.
This week’s PPotW goes to consummate club guy, Nigel Hickman. Nige has been a great addition for the club – his hard-work at training, his devotion to the club by coming out to Mars before and after games to support all the teams were rewarded this week with his efforts on court for D-ynamite by hitting the game winning basket with the clock winding down. Well done Nige.

Round 10
Palky’s Player Of The Week – Week 10:
There were a few stand outs this week – Darsow’s return was fantastic – his 16 point 2nd half was incredible and he easily fit in with the team structure – it was a testament to his willingness to help the team. Palky would like to give Palky’s Player of the Week to Palky for his efforts but is too humble for that. Jamie again was very good for D-ynamite – in the words of his look-a-like “That’s What I’m Talking About”.
This week’s PPotW goes to Liam Golding for the 2nd time this year. His 16 points (slashing/cutting in the post and his 2 clutch 3’s) combined with great rebounding as the 2nd big man in the 3-2 and passing gets him the chocolates this week. Liam is having best year since his all conquering 2004 season.

Round 11
Palky’s Player Of The Week – Week 11:
Stu and Liam were tremendous in the A’s as was Purge, Baker was the best for the B’s – his 11 2nd half points and his surprisingly good defence and rebounding had his team looking like they could cause an upset, I was thinking about giving the C’s PPotW but that would defeat the purpose of the term “player***”, Corey’s return to the D-isableds was up to his usual high standards.
This week’s Palky’s Player of the Week goes to Nic Blair. Nic had his best effort for the year – he missed only a couple of shots in his 32 points – he hit 3’s, lay-ups, pull up j’s, he passed a bit which (was nice for a change)****, played terrible defence and got a massive dunk which brought shock and awe to the Mars Stadium. Well done Nic – you deserve it.
*** This is much like my #1 gripe at the moment – during the Sunday footy Channel 7 show their “7 Plays in 7 Days” except each “play” is not 1 play it is a group of plays, for example, they show the best 8 marks from last week or the best 5 goals or a great individual performance ... so yesterday their “7 Plays in 7 Days” was actually “28 Plays in 7 Day”. It freaking annoys me ... almost as much as everyone on Channel 9’s Thursday and Sunday Footy shows saying “up and about”. ANNOYING!
**** You’re a great kid Nic

Round 12
Palky’s Player Of The Week – Week 12:
Blair was best for the A’s with 27, 21 in the 2nd half, Don was good in the B’s, Corey and Jamie were best in the D’s and Toddy was the only shining light in the E’s.
This week’s Palky’s Player of the Week goes to the ageless Phil Motteram. Phil is putting together a very good season – his defence and rebounding has been the literal centre piece to the C’s defence all season but on Saturday his offensive game was amazing. He was unstoppable in the post – he just couldn’t miss – with good service from his teammates Phil led the way with 18 points. I have played with Phil for many years now and it is the best game I have ever seen him play (overtaking his dominant performance in the semi final in 2004). Great job Phil.

Round 13
Palky’s Player Of The Week – Week 13:
Tough one this week – Stu and Jack were awesome in the A’s, G was the best in the C’s, Corey, Jamie and Cliffy would have split the votes in the D’s and Toddy and Rich were great in the E’s.
This week’s Palky’s Player of the Week goes to a player who played in the only game we lost this week – Josh Orken. Orks was superb for the B’s – after being away from the team for 4 weeks he came back with a higher level of intensity – he hit the defensive glass stifling SPOC’s early attempts to play their style of ball, he (with his team mates) shutdown 2 Steps Tonkin, he made 4 tough lay-ups (being fouled on all 4) and made a big 3. Good to have your Dad’s son back Orks – the jug is all yours..

Round 14
Palky’s Player Of The Week – Week 14:
There were some good performances this week – Big A played his best game for the year and Blair played a great 2nd half, Orken and B-Rad were too much for the undermanned Somerton, Yates did a fine job shutting down HUVC’s best player (and arguably the best player in the C/D Grade), Jamie and Corey lead the way for the D’s and Nellie and Rich were the standouts for the E’s in a big win for them.
This week’s PPotW has to go to Adam Vodopivec. Vods was fantastic on Saturday, he scored going right, he scored going left, he scored on drop-steps and hooks, he created his own shots, hit a nice jumper, got to the line and also hit the glass and got put backs. A total game – with Phil dominating 2 weeks ago and Vods this week, The C Train has great scoring down low – an advantage we need to take advantage of.
Well done The Puppet Master.

Round 15
Palky’s Player Of The Week – Week 15:
Some good performance this week – Liam, Stu and Blair were all good for the A’s (played a great team game and cost themselves the individual glory of PPotW), Jay was best for the B’s, Corey and Jamie again proved they are a class above the
rest in the D’s and Toddy and Rich again were best for the E’s.
This week’s Palky’s Player of the Week goes to Nathan Graham. When G gets on fire it is a sight to behold – he has been struggling of late so was great to see him have a break out game. G was hitting fadeaways from 16 feet, making his short jumper look easy, getting in the lane and hitting tough leaners, he hit 3 3’s, he rebounded well and made a couple of great passes inside. When we were struggling late he came off the bench and iced the game with 3 clutch jumpers and finished with 24 points. Great game G!.

Round 16
Palky’s Player Of The Week – Week 16:
In the A’s Blair, Stu, Liam and Goody all played well, Orken and Mike were great in the B’s, G and Yates were best in the C’s, Jamie and Corey were good in the D’s.
This week’s Palky’s Player of the Week goes to Andrew Todd. In a game where the E’s needed to
step up and send a message to Clovercrest Toddy was the stand out in a tough fought victory. Leading the team with 12 points – his defence, rebounding and leadership got the
team the victory. Well done Toddy..

Finals Week 1
Palky’s Player Of The Week – Finals Week 1:
In the A’s, Big A’s super clutch offensive board, put back jumper and subsequent free throw to tie the game and send it to OT was something to behold – loudest cheer I have heard from supporters. Everyone in the B’s had an impact – Altmann was good with 16 points but am sure he is a little disappointed having missed a couple of open looks, Vods was great in the C’s – special mention to Yates who was very ill but played as hard as he could for almost a full game. The D’s – Jamie and Cliff were handy – Corey’s leadership was vital. The E’s – not many standouts – Troy battled – DMT and Toddy worked hard down low.
PPotW this week goes to Nic Blair. Nic’s effort was incredible – he kept the team in the game early when the team was in danger of getting blown out, worked harder on D than I can every recall, in the 2nd half he willed the team to victory and his take away steal late in the game was crucial. Finished with 23 in a tough loss. I’m sure winning PPotW is bittersweet.

Finals Week 2
Palky’s Player Of The Week – Finals Week 2:
Three players had great games – Altmann’s shooting kept the B’s in the game, Corey’s poise was the reason the D’s got over the line.
PPotW this week goes to Nic Blair for the 2nd week in a row. I have seen Blair play some great games over the years but I think this had to be his best. His rebounding and overall defence were standout. On offense his great shooting in the 1st half, his clutch free throw shooting in the 2nd half, his confidence and reliance in his teammates and improved shot selection got him 24 points and the accolades this week – second week in a row. Well done Nic – you’re a good kid!

Finals Week 3
Palky’s Player Of The Week – Finals Week 3:
This week Blair, Liam and Corey played great – but this week’s PPotW goes to Jamie Young. He had a great first half but when the game was in the balance he made 3 great plays to give his team the lead. Well done Jamie
