Golding’s Golden Boy - 2010

Round 1

In an up and down first round for the Reds, the club had many players putting their hands up for the recognition of the player of the week award. In the A’s, Jack showed control and quality when many team-mates were down, in the D’s Macca finished well down the stretch to close a 13 point deficit and Palky showed signs that he is going to enjoy the E team with defenders lining up to buy his tasty array of fakes and floaters.

But this week's player of the week dealt a hammer blow to the opposition with 6 points in the last minute and a 3 with 5.8 seconds remaining on the clock to tie the game. Jamie Young take a bow. Back-to-Back POTY awards after his inspired baseline scoop putting the icing on a quality all around game in last year’s grand final got him that award.

Round 2

The E's won in a forfeit and we are getting a ruling on whether the stats from that game count. None the less it's a bit hard to hand out player of the week in a dead rubber. The D’s had a good win with Brownie and Macca being a standout. The C’s … well I think the report covered that angry, angry ground. The B’s had good contributions from Yates and Orken in a tough match against quality opposition and the A’s were balanced and clinical with all playing well.

So this week’s GGB for his standout performance in a rebound win - carrying on his good form from the last five minutes of last week – Andrew McKinnon takes the jug. He was full of energy in a team down on numbers so his spark was particularly important. A quality rounded performance full of hustle, great shooting and composed finishing (except for the last 5 minutes) it was a fine match from Macca who set his career high with 16 and if not for tired legs would have had 20. His award is richly deserved - nice work Macca

Round 3

With only three matches on the weekend and a 33% success rate there are less candidates than normal for this award. The C’s were driven to the brink of success by Mike Tye with some solid shooting down the stretch and Kobe's baseline was entertaining throughout. G scored a lot for the B’s but still frankly wasn't awesome. Which leaves another balanced performance from the A’s to consider. Really it's between some excellent shooting in the second half from Ben Darsow and a solid 40 minutes from Captain Jack. So for the fact he does was what is required when it is required throughout, Jack Harford gets this week’s award. Jack is gaining momentum as an early favourite for the Players’ Player medal with three from three composed performances so far this season. He showed on Saturday he can also add the glitter to his game with an OMGTWFA pass to Goody with scores tied late. A well deserved award to a player who just keeps on getting better.

Round 4

This week’s PPotW goes to the 17 year club veteran Simon Miller for 4 3’s in the 2nd half and some great on ball D. Sime turned a game that was close into a blowout in a few plays. Well done Sime on your first Player of the Week.

Round 5

A four win afternoon tends to make selecting CCotW more difficult. But it's a nice kind of difficult. Like watching Yates trying to pick up a really hot bird ... actually not sure how that goes. Anyway, bad analogies aside, the E Train looks to be checking tickets as it pulls away from the station with another win the key players including (no uniform/no scorer) with 4 proving the difference in a three point win (that said Flair dominated), Udit was best in the D’s. At Mars, the teams all look to be settling well with improved performances and victories. The A Team (in cinemas 10 June 2010) looked better than ever getting a good spread of scoring though 21 from Dave was particularly impressive, the B’s famous victory was underpinned by Leo's shooting and Corey inside, while great shooting again from Reggie once again set up the C’s for a win while the bigs finished off the job.

While there may be many deserving this week’s award, the winner is Gorgeous Leo Borges as his shooting was the key as the B’s won a great match from a tough position late. Leo has made a big difference to this team taking them to another level and showing they can be extremely dangerous. On talent Modbury are arguable grand finalists, so this is a big win and one to use for momentum coming into a stretch of crucial matches. With Leo playing like this they look ready. Good work Leo, we look forward to handing you a jug soon.

Round 6

Palky was the best in the E’s with 16 of his team’s 21, Temple was a monster on the boards in the D’s, the C’s were relatively balanced with good scoring from Sime and Mike Tye leading them to a win. The B’s had good shooting from Leo while Jay ran things well on the break. Orken was good in two games, particularly his 16 in the A's where he was often the recipient of awesome passes from Captain Jack. Once again not an easy week to make the selection - good balance and not too much being left to too few. CCotW for Week 6 is Ben Darsow.

Ben has been great this year contributing what is needed at key times while his shooting, as always, has been a highlight. Two weeks in a row he has scored heavily and efficiently. Well chosen shots, well made passing and good intensity up and down the floor. At the start of the season we weren't sure how we could fit Ben into the side as a nine man roster looked difficult to rotate. But Ben has been exceptional, changing his game to suit the circumstance, and stepping up when required. Good work Ben we'll get you a jug at the Hackney soon.

Round 7

A good week for most teams means a lot of good players. Everyone for the A's was significantly better than every opposition player, Darsow stood out because he got so many shots but hitting 30 is impressive, while Stu will likely get votes for hitting his 2000th career point. In the C’s, BB's energy was amazing, especially considering him being a bit ill, and important for the team as they got a good win, Mike, Lunny and Altmann also important. For the B's Orken battled well with Kong and if not for the loss would possibly be CCotW though Leo down low and G’s shooting was also important getting a lead early. At Hillcrest, Macca and Fornarino were the standouts for the D’s but I cannot underplay the importance of the Pez’s role as the team’s point – what they have been missing all year. Caldy was very good in the E’s, his best game of the year.

This week’s CCotW goes to James Davey. James had a magnificent debut for the club – his 14 points and great defence was the main reason the E’s made a good team look below their best. We see big things for James if he keeps up this kind of play. One game, one free jug – that is a pretty decent return ... well done mate!

Round 8

The candidates this week – all the A’s were solid with no real standouts – Dave was probably the best in an amazing team effort, Jamie was good in the B’s with 14, Cam was the best for the D’s and Palky’s timely 3’s and Sully’s late domination won the game for the E’s. This week’s CCotW goes to Tom Lunn.

Lunny had a great game – as with all Saints’ teams – they have 4 or 5 tall gangly players that make it hard to score inside but Lunny put on a low post clinic and was unstoppable – as stated in the report every time the ball went low he would either score or get to the line. He rebounded well on both ends and finished with 16. Well done Lunny – the free jug is yours.

Round 9

Few good performances this week – Palky was again very good in the E’s, Udit had a cracker in the D’s, Altmann was best in the C’s ably assisted with Cliff’s great 2nd half, Leo went mental with 29 in a forfeit win, Dave had a great 1st half and Stu and Darsow had really good 2nd halves in the A’s.

This week’s CCotW goes to Guy Collins ... for the sole fact he made 4 of 4 free throws ... and I guess the 15 rebounds + the few assists, steals, blocks and he controlled the offense ... but mainly for the free throws. The jug is all yours Flair.

Round 10

Palky and Toddy were best in the E’s, the D’s had a balanced scoring game from Macca, Acott, Baker and Browne, Sime was best for the C’s, Yates, Jay and Leo were best for the B’s and Darsow played very well for the D’s. This week’s CCotW goes to Udit Lakra. This year Udit has taken a secondary scoring role trying to distribute more and just score when his team needs it – this week Udit has his biggest game for the year and lead his team to their biggest victory of the season in their own mini-Intercol.

Round 11

Flair was good in the E’s, Cam and Acott good in the D’s, Sime was best in the C’s and is strengthening as favourite for the C’s Players’ Player, Loky, Leo and Yates all had good games in the B’s and Dave and Captain Jack were good in the A’s. This week’s CCotW has to go to Ben Darsow. Dars is having an amazing year – his 2 months of games he has scored 18, 30, 15, 17, 16 and 15 – averaging 18.5 ppg and three 3’s per game. On Saturday when he had half a look he knocked down the shot. Well done on your 2nd Player of the Week.

Round 12

Trev was outstanding for the E's taking control of the team when it needed to be done. James Acott continued his consistent scoring record leading the D's once again. Mike and Phil showed the benefit of experience for the C's, against the rangey youth Leo and Orken worked extremely hard and got good reward. For the A's a few players had streaky moments but the standout for the day was a great back to back performance from Tom Lunn. Lunny has been in a rich vein of form recently and he backed up a quality intercol night with 40 solid and effective minutes against the youth before leading the scoring for the C's. A great days work Lunny. Congrats.

Round 15

he A’s had an “All Played Well” performance with Darsow probably the standout, Leo was best for the B’s, the C’s had Sime, Lunny, Phil and Mike all in double figures – unheard when the team scored 45. The D’s, Pez’s D was key and in the E’s Davey was great and Palky was solid.

The winner this week with his 2nd CCotW of the year is Udit Lakra. Udit left it all on the court Saturday – he played 40 minutes at centre against a huge Saints front court, he scored two clutch baskets down low when his team needed it, he got a 20+ boards and put in a real Captain’s effort when his team was on the brink of having its seasons ended. Udit has spent much of this year trying to lead by example and turning up shots to get his teammates involved but on Saturday he stepped up huge when his team needed him. It really was one of the great individual games in the history of this club and as I said earlier I was happy to be there to witness it.

Round 16

Some good performances – DB in the A’s with 19, Blair’s fantastic 33 points in the B’s, Lunny in the C’s, all of the D’s and Flair in the E’s. The winner in a clutch performance to get his team into the Finals – this week’s CCotW in Andrew McKinnon Macca has had a great season – his much improved 3 point shooting and his ability to run the break and finish is vital to his team’s success – this was highlighted in his game on Saturday as he completely destroyed Clovercrest with 21 points in the season’s most important game. Well done Macca.
